Porcelain and ceramic tiles are often presented as competing products, but the distinction is more practical than promotional. Porcelain is a type of ceramic tile made with a relatively dense body and fired to achieve low water absorption. Other ceramic tiles may have a more porous body and are commonly used for walls and suitable indoor floors.

Porcelain is frequently considered for such settings, but the exact surface and construction must match the location. Project buyers should request representative samples, technical data and installation guidance. For larger orders, retain approved control samples and agree how shade, calibre and acceptable variation will be checked during delivery.
Glazed, unglazed and full-body porcelain
Glazed porcelain has a surface layer that provides colour, pattern and texture. Its wear suitability depends partly on that surface. Unglazed porcelain does not depend on a decorative glaze and may be appropriate for demanding applications when supported by its technical rating.
Terms such as full-body, double-charge and colour-body are sometimes used loosely. Ask the supplier to explain the tile construction and provide the relevant product data. A colour running through the body can make chips less noticeable, but it does not by itself prove slip resistance or suitability for heavy traffic.

Ceramic tiles can be economical for indoor walls and moderate-use areas. They may also reduce cutting difficulty and installation time in layouts with many fixtures. Porcelain can cost more to purchase, cut and drill, especially in thick, textured or large-format versions.
Compare the installed cost rather than the box price alone. Include substrate preparation, waterproofing, adhesive, grout, trims, cutting tools, labour and wastage. A lower-priced tile can become expensive if sizes vary significantly or the surface is unsuitable for the intended cleaning routine.
